"How Does This Work?"
One of the questions I get most often from clients is that very question. You look outside of our Tasting Lounge and clearly there are no vineyards out there, so where and how do we make our phenomenal wines?
Sail to Trail is a very specific type of winery called a "Négociant" winery. You can think of us as a winery without one specific vineyard. If you've heard of Louis Jadot or Joseph Drouhin, they too are négociants and have brought some spectacular wines to market over the years.
Say you have a really great vineyard, but really no interest or ability to make wine on a large scale. Now say you're a winemaker, but you don't own a vineyard. Sounds like it could be a match made in heaven, right? Well that's where the négociant come in. We're matchmakers of sorts! Our team scours the country looking for vineyards, winemakers (sometimes they are the same person, sometimes they are not) and brings everyone together to develop products that are very specific in terms of what we bring to market.
Our Sommelier here, myself, and a Sommelier that we work with down south all discuss what wines we'd like to develop, and with what flavor profiles. A great example of this would be in how we developed our 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2018 Chardonnay. New Englanders are really partial to peppery Cabs with big flavor profiles (long winters) and unoaked or very-lightly oaked Chards that are crisp and refreshing (hot, humid summers). So the team gets together, decides on a course of action, and we're off!
Our Somm down south also acts as something of a relationship broker and then armed with the flavor profiles we're looking for, heads to the West Coast (for the most part) and tries to find vineyards that consistently produce great, well, produce, and winemakers that consistently produce great wine! We all work together to develop wines with the specific flavor profile we're trying to achieve, and bring the results to you!
So that's the story of how Sail to Trail is able to bring to you some of todays most desirable wine varietals, in outstanding examples of those varietals, at a great value. We work really, really hard to find partners that have been in the industry for a long time, and have impeccable reputations, but also love to team with wineries like ours to bring great value to our clients.
Hope you're having a great week!
